Research Seed Grants
Purpose:
These seed grants are designed to facilitate the development of research expertise in aerospace engineering/space science at ISGC institutions and allow the award recipients to obtain the preliminary results needed to support larger proposals to other federal or non-federal funding agencies. The grants are available to faculty members or research scientists at all ISGC institutions that are not participating in an ISGC-funded multiple undergraduate research program.
Awards:
A total of $70,000* has been allocated to these grants for the period March 1, 2010 – February 28, 2011. The funding level of each seed grant is up to $10,000.

Requirements:
- Seed grant must support research in an area of interest to NASA, e.g., aerospace engineering, physics, astronomy, cosmology or Earth system science.
- Grants must be matched (at least one-to-one) with funds from non-federal sources. Prior to the execution of a subaward agreement, the source of matching funds must be identified and confirmed by a letter from the appropriate authority. Waived indirect costs and faculty effort can qualify as matching funds.
- The objective of this grant is to support new areas of research. Selected proposals may reapply for a second year of funding. Proposals can include requests for salary, supplies, and travel support. ISGC funds cannot be used for the purchase of equipment.
- Any beneficiary of direct support (salary, wages, travel) from this grant MUST be a US citizen.
- The project PI will submit a final report by Feb 28, 2011, to give a complete description of research expertise development activities. The report will also include the status of proposals recently submitted/to be submitted based on the activities funded by the Research Seed Grant.
- All application materials must be submitted electronically by January 15, 2010.
Applications:
Complete the on-line application form. In the "Documents" section:
- Select "Curriculum Vita and upload the PI vita including significant publications (vita no more than two pages);
- Select "Other Supporting Document" and upload your budget (sample budget format);
- Select "Statement of Purpose" and upload your project description. The project description should include:
- Research description
- Timeline
- Plans for proposal submissions to federal and non-federal sources based on the work to be completed
The Statement of Purpose should be single-spaced text in 12-point font with one-inch margins and be no more than four pages in length.
Selection Criteria:
Proposals will be reviewed by a ISGC Review Panel and selected based on adherence to the above criteria, scientific merit, and equitable distribution of resources across the Consortium. Women, under-represented minorities and persons with disabilities are encouraged to apply. Participation in this program is limited to faculty (research and professorial) at ISGC affiliate and lead institutions that are not participating in an ISGC-funded multiple undergraduate research program. .To Apply:
