Lambros Named ASME Fellow

Professor John Lambros makes the third AE faculty member this year to have achieved the status of Fellow within the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME).

Sixty Years and Going Strong

Emeritus Prof. Harry H. Hilton reached a remarkable milestone in September 2009 — his 60th continuous year at the University of Illinois.

College Honors Archambault

The university, college, and Department of Aerospace Engineering welcomed Colonel Lee J. Archambault, BS 82, MS 84 AE, a distinguished United States Air Force pilot and NASA astronaut, back to campus during the Foundation weekend Oct. 2-4.

Curriculum

Applies to new freshmen matriculating in Fall 2010, and to earlier students who elect this curriculum.

The Aerospace Engineering curriculum provides a strong fundamental background in engineering, mathematics, and science, along with the ability to apply this fundamental knowledge to the analysis and design of future aircraft and spacecraft. It also prepares students for lifelong learning and the attainment of their career goals in the field of aerospace engineering and in a wide range of other areas. The concepts of system design are introduced early in the curriculum and culminate in the yearlong senior capstone design experience (AE 442, AE 443), in which students work in teams to respond to a design challenge from industry, government, or a professional engineering society. A total of 18 hours of technical and free electives allows the student to pursue an individualized program of study.

128 hours are required for graduation

1Elective credits totaling 36 hours are required. These include 18 hours of social science and humanities (including the campus General Education requirements), 6 hours of 400-level AE courses, 6 hours of approved technical electives (up to 3 hours of technical electives may be from AE 498), and 6 hours of free electives (AE 100 counts as a free elective).

2MATH 415 can be taken to replace MATH 225. The extra hour can be used as either technical or free elective.

3AE 202 will be taught both semesters

4Junior-level courses 311/312, 321/323, 352/353 can be taken in any order.

5ECE 205/206 can be taken any semester after PHYS 212 and before AE 483.

6STAT 400 can be substituted for IE 300.

7AE 442/443 sequence satisfies the General Education Advanced Composition requirement.

8AE 461 can be taken any semester after AE 321 and can be taken concurrently with AE 323.
