The 1996/97 Cessna/ONR Student Design/Build/Fly Competition fly-off was held at Ragged Island Maryland on Saturday, 26 April. The inaugural year of the competition was a great success. I want to congratulate all the participating teams on their efforts. Everyone can be proud of the efforts put forth and the achievements made in participating in the contest. A special thanks goes to our sponsors and financial supporters, Cessna Aircraft Company, and The Office of Naval Research and to our host, BAI Aerosystems. Thank you also to the judges and contest support staff.

I would also like to congratulate the teams for their competitive spirit and camaraderie. A special recognition goes to the teams from Syracuse University, Washington State University, and University of California, Los Angeles for showing the true spirit of the competition. Although they were unable to obtain a scored flight, the team members continued through the entire day to work on their aircraft and make repeated flight attempts.
