Chuck Hollinger "EZ Riser" was orginally designed for electric
duration competition, but after the competition and upon hearing of
the AIAA R/C Design/Build/Fly Competition he converted the Riser to go
for distance. Vital Stats: 11 ft wing span, 1250 sq in, Astro 05 (6
turns), 5 lb 4 oz empty weight, (20) 1200 ma cells (12 pack + 8 pack),
5 lb payload, FX 63-137 main wing airfoil. He writes "The 12 cell
pack was used for takeoff and climb-out. The 8 cell pack easily held
its altitude for most of the flight while the 12 cells gained the
extra altitude so part of the distance was covered while in the glide
mode. Nevertheless, I squeezed out 15 laps. Now this was over a
loosely flown course, but at least it's a starting point."

This is the SENDER UAV being
developed by the Naval Research Lab. It is a man-portable fully
autonomous electric powered aircraft capable of carrying a 2.5 lb
payload over 100 miles.

The Naval Research Lab LAURA program
investigated a number of unique aircraft configurations which were all
designed and sized to perform the same mission. The mission consisted
of a high speed dash followed by a low speed long endurance loiter.
The designs reflect the impact of accomodating the two extremes in
flight speed.

Viable electric propulsion has
been made possible by the availability of very high efficiency
brushless electric motors utilizing solid state speed controllers.
This is the propulsion system for the SENDER UAV shown above.
