The airfoil data presented at the ftp site is that included in the series of airfoil data books: Summary of Low-Speed Airfoil Data - Volumes 1, 2, 3 and 4. Volume 4 has recently been completed, and Vols 5 and 6 are currently being prepared. Watch the UIUC Applied Aerodynamics Group homepage for announcements regarding future volumes.
The entire airfoil test effort is supported through donations, so ... if you would like our work to continue, please send a donation. The odds of successfully supporting university research through donations like this were thought to be slim, but it seems to be working. Your tax deductible donations can be mailed to

Please make your check payable to "University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign" and write "UIUC LSATs (Selig)" in the memo line.
The airfoil performance data is on the UIUC LSATs ftp site (see below). Also, it can be browsed by starting here
The airfoil performance data is copyrighted, and restrictions are placed on its use. The data may be freely copied and used in any way, e.g., for personal use, in magazine articles or with a commercial product. If the data is used in a magazine article or book, the author must reference the appropriate volume of Summary of Low-Speed Airfoil Data and give the address of where it can be obtained. If the data is used in a commercial product, there must be no extra charges for providing it - other than the cost of reproduction and distribution. All products that make use of this data must conspicuously state that it was produced under the UIUC Low-Speed Airfoil Tests (LSATs) Program, and no restrictions can be placed on the recipient with respect to their use of the source data. Furthermore, they must be allowed to copy the original data and freely distribute it as well. It is in this sense that all access to this data is free. More details can be found in the general public license. A copy of the license, the copyright notice and the UIUC Low-Speed Airfoil Tests Manifesto must be included with each distribution of the data. The manifesto on the web is that included with the Vols. 1 and 2 books, but it was modified for the later volumes. The latter version is included with the data distribution disk.
