For the R/C soaring airfoils, several were tested with various trailing-edge flap settings as suggested by R/C soaring enthusiasts. In particular, large flap settings of 15-25 degs to were tested to give insight into possible performance improvements during launch, and smaller flap settings of 2.5 degs were tested to represent typical control deflections during thermal soaring. Supplementing this data are leading-edge flap settings of -3 deg and 2.5 deg tested on the popular SD7037. Also, as variations of the popular SD7037, three new airfoils, the SA7035, SA7036, and SA7038, were designed and wind-tunnel tested.

The second group of airfoils used on powered R/C aircraft were tested. With a majority of the attention from airfoil designers focused on the design of new R/C soaring airfoils, a large disparity in performance has resulted between sailplane and powered airfoils. With this volume, the UIUC LSATs team has attempted to lay the foundation for reducing this disparity. To be more specific, several airfoils used on popular powered R/C aircraft were tested to provide a benchmark against which new designs can be compared. Serving as an indicator of the possible performance improvements, three new airfoils, the S8036, S8037, and S8052, were designed and tested.

Airfoils for use on small wind turbines comprise the third group of airfoils tested. Among these are four new airfoils (SG6040 - SG6043) specifically designed for variable-speed wind turbines. The reader will note that several of the airfoils listed here were designed specifically for use on aircraft (A18, SD7032, and SD7062). These airfoils, together with three others grouped under the "Sailplane" and "Powered Aircraft" headings (Clark-Y, S7012, and SD7037), were tested with leading-edge roughness to establish their potential for use on small wind turbines.

Also, this volume contains a rather extensive study of the effect boundary-layer trips have on airfoil performance. Experience, however, has proven such a study to be impractical for every airfoil. Therefore, two candidate airfoils were selected which are representative of a majority of the airfoils used on R/C model aircraft. These were the SD7037 and the E374. Each was tested with various trip configurations (single, multiple), geometries (2-D, 3-D), locations, and heights.

Summary of Low-Speed Airfoil Data - Vol 3 is 418 pages of narrative and data much like the previous works Summary of Low-Speed Airfoil Data - Vols 1 and 2 (1995, 1996) and Airfoils at Low Speeds (SoarTech #8 - 1989). This book is similar in content and organization to Volumes 1 and 2. We've set the price at $35 + shipping:

NEW BOOK: Summary of Low-Speed Airfoil Data - Volume 2

Department of Aerospace Engineering
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Urbana, Illinois 61801
Michael S. Selig, Christopher A. Lyon, Philippe Giguere, Cameron P. Ninham
and James J. Guglielmo

The second installment of the wind tunnel work that Michael Selig and his
graduate students have been conducting at the University of Illinois, may
now be ordered. This work is titled "Summary of Low-Speed Airfoil Data -
Volume 2." Twenty five airfoils were tested, many with a variety of flap and
turbulator configurations. Continuous improvement of the wind tunnel, and
data reduction system has resulted in better accuracy and reliability in the
data. The team is still working to improve these systems. In the next series
increased accuracy and the addition of airfoil pitching moment data may be
expected.

Volume 2 is based on the second series of wind tunnel tests at UIUC. A third
series of tests have now begun, and we expect that some time before the end
of 1996, Volume 3 will also be published.

"Summary ... Vol 2" is 251 pages of narrative and data much like the team's
previous work "Summary of Low-Speed Airfoil Data - Volume 1" (1995) and
Michael's "Airfoils at Low Speeds" (SoarTech #8, 1989). This book is similar
in content and organization to Volume 1, and is similar also to the material
in "Airfoils at Low Speeds." We've set the price at $25 in the USA - which
includes postage.

All of the actual tabulated data and airfoil coordinates (but none of the
narrative or illustrations) in the book are available on-disk in ascii text
files. There is no program for use of these files included on the disk.
These are provided for those who wish to use the data in their own programs.
By formatting the data properly, their use can make manual re-entry of the
data unnecessary. The price for the disk data in the USA is $15 including
postage.

When ordering the book from outside the USA, add $4 to the basic US price
for international surface mail. For Air Mail to the Western Hemisphere add
$6 to the basic US price. For Air Mail to Europe add $13, and for other
parts of the world add $17. For disk orders from outside of the USA add one
dollar to it's price.

A significant portion of the price received from all book and disk sales
will be returned to UIUC to provide part of the continuing support for
Michael's ongoing test program.

Summary of Low-Speed Airfoil Data - Volume 1, and SoarTech 8 are both
currently available also. The price for Volume 1 is the same as for Volume
2. SoarTech 8 has a base price in the USA of $20 and the international
surcharges are the same as for Volume 1 and 2. Data disks are also available
for Volume 1 and SoarTech 8. The SoarTech Aero operation isn't big enough to
handle credit card orders. Please feel free to question me directly by
email, (herkstok@aol.com) or send regular mail to SoarTech Aero Publications,
1504 N. Horseshoe Circle, Virginia Beach VA 23451 U.S.A.

When ordering, PLEASE provide a check or money order in US Dollars which can
be paid at a US bank. U.S. cash is also accepted. Residents of Virginia
should add the state 4-1/2 percent sales tax to the above rates.

Summary of Low-Speed Airfoil Data, Volume 1

The new wind tunnel work that Michael Selig and his graduate students
have completed at the University of Illinois is now on paper and is
available. This work is titled "Summary of Low-Speed Airfoil Data
- Volume 1". It's volume one because of the continuing nature of
the airfoil wind-tunnel program at UIUC. There will soon be a volume two based
on the the second period of testing. This has now been completed and
the results are being prepared for publication.

"Summary ......." is 317 pages of narrative and data much like Michael's previous work "Airfoils at Low Speeds" (SoarTech #8). There is more narrative, and the book is organized differently, but it is obvious from reading through it, that it is the next installment of the same basic material. We've set the price at $25 in the USA - which includes postage. All of the actual tabulated data and airfoil coordinates (but none of the narrative or illustrations) in the book is available on-disk in ascii text files. The price for the disk data in the USA is $15 including postage. When ordering the book from outside the USA, add $4 to the book price for international surface mail. For Air Mail to the Western Hemisphere add $6. For Air Mail to Europe add $13, and for other parts of the world add $17. For disk orders from outside of the USA add one dollar to it's price - all separate disk orders will be sent by first class airmail.

A significant portion of the price received from all book and disk sales will be returned to UIUC to provide part of the continuing support for Michael's ongoing test program.

The book is available and may be ordered now. SoarTech isn't big enough to handle credit card orders, but you can question me directly by email (SoarTec@aol.com) or send regular mail to SoarTech Aero Publications, 1504 N. Horseshoe Cir., Virginia Beach VA 23451.

When ordering, PLEASE provide a check or money order in US Dollars which can be paid at a US bank. U.S. cash is also accepted. Residents of Virginia should add the state 4-1/2 percent sales tax to the above rates. Sorry but he can't take credit card or COD orders at this time.
