Research Areas

Research Area: Lasers

The research being conducted in lasers is very diverse. Some of the current projects focus on experimental verification of the cause of high frequency oscillations in unstable resonators, residual fundamental gain measurements while lasing on the overtone, and several investigations into different aspects of the ElectriCOIL laser. There are currently four active research projects in lasers. Several of these projects are sponsored by government agencies and leading industry companies such as: Northrup-Grumman Space Technology, Ballistic Missile Defense Office, the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, and a Multidisciplinary Research Initiative. The research is conducted by faculty members, numerous graduate students, undergraduate students, and visiting scholars.

Faculty Researchers: Labs:
  • L. H. Sentman - Chemical lasers, nonequilibrium flow modeling, molecular energy transfer, kinetic theory and statistical mechanics, fluid dynamics, space environmental effects on satellite motion
  • W. C. Solomon - Gas-phase kinetics, space systems, high-energy lasers
