Description of Research:
Directed by G. S. Elliott and N. Glumac. This experimental laboratory has facilities to investigate the control of fluid dynamic phenomena using local energy deposition. The energy is provided from a focused pulsed laser beam which results in laser induced optical breakdown in the gas. The research focuses on using this "laser spark" to control several different flow phenomena such as shock waves and turbulence. The laboratory houses several lasers including a high repetition rate pulse burst laser and a supersonic wind tunnel facility. This research is currently funded by AFOSR.
