Description of Research:

Directed by Professor J. Lambros. Dynamic (impact) response of materials is studied. A high speed gas gun as well as two tension and two compression Split Hopkinson (Kolsky) Bars are available for intermediate and high rate materials testing. Ultra-high strain rate loading is achieved using a 1J Nd:YAG laser. Real time optical and thermal diagnostics are used in conjunction with these loading devices. Optical imaging is performed using a rotating mirror high speed camera (up to 2,000,000 frames per second) and a high powered pulsed Argon ion laser. Temperature measurement is made using a high speed infrared detector sensing array. Static tests are also conducted using a computer controlled load frame mounted on an optical table.
