Description of Research:

Co-directed by Prof. L. A. Bergman (Aerospace Engineering) and Prof. A. F. Vakakis (Mechanical & Industrial Engineering and Aerospace Engineering). Recent experiments conducted in this laboratory have focused on the rapid targeted transfer of energy between potentially complex subsystems and nonlinear energy sinks ("energy pumping") under various kinds of excitations and on the effects of mechanical joints on the global dynamics of built-up structures. Both programs complement analytical and numerical investigations being carried out by the same research group and involve undergraduate and graduate students, post-doctoral researchers, and international visitors. Support for student participation and/or equipment purchases has come from AFOSR, ONR, NSF, Sandia National Laboratories, and NASA.
